Easter Cookie Painting

This craft works as a wonderful project for school parties or children church activities. It would be a good idea to have the kids wear painting shirts over their clothes because the food coloring can stain clothes. It won’t stain skin though and it can be easily wiped off counters and tables, so you don’t have to worry about hands, faces or other items turning colors.

Easter Cookie Painting - Fun craft project for kids!

What You Will Need:

1. Prepared and chilled sugar cookie dough
2. Cookie Cutters in Easter shapes, like eggs, flowers, chicks and bunnies
3. Water
4. New, clean paintbrushes in various sizes
5. Food Coloring
6. Small paper cups
7. Popsicle sticks
8. Frosting (optional)
9. Medicine dropper

Directions:

1. With adult supervision, let the kids roll out and cut the sugar cookie dough into the Easter shapes.
2. Place the dough on cookie sheets and bake in oven for recipe recommended time.
3. When the cookies are cooked, let them cool.
4. While the cookies are cooling, you are going to mix the “paint” for your cookies.
5. Put out enough cups for all the colors you want.
6. Put four drops of food coloring in a cup.
7. Add between six and seven drops of water to the food coloring, depending on how light or dark you want the color to be.
8. Use the Popsicle sticks to mix the paint.
9. Repeat this process for all of the colors you wish to use.
10. You can also mix colors to create other colors, like blue and red to make purple, and so on.
11. Provide the kids with paintbrushes and let them paint their cookies. Explain to them that they can’t get their paintbrushes too wet, or else it will make the cookies fall apart. It won’t take much food coloring paint to make it change colors.
12. The frosting can also be used to “glue” candies onto the cookies for eyes, buttons or other decorations.
13. If you run out of paint simply mix more in its cup and continue painting.
14. When everyone is done painting and decorating their cookies. Let them sit for a few minutes so that the food coloring dries, and then you can eat and enjoy them.

These cookies also work well as gifts if you wrap them in plastic wrap and tie the ends with ribbon, like a piece of candy.
